Muscle strain
A strain (or 'pull') is a stretch and/or tear of muscle fibres and/or tendon, and is classified by severity.
Grade 1 = mild - limited number of fibres torn.
Grade 2 = moderate - nearly half of fibres are torn.
Grade 3 = Severe - complete rupture of fibres.
They typically affect the quads, hamstrings, back, and calf.
-
Muscles that are frequently involved cross two joints (eg. the hamstrings), act mainly in an eccentric fashion, and contain a high percentage of fast-twitch fibers.
This mostly occurs as a result of a powerful eccentric contraction or over-stretching of the muscle. Therefore, it is typical for non-contact sports with dynamic characteristics such as sprinting and jumping.
-
Symptoms of a strain typically include muscle pain, cramping, and spasm; muscle weakness, reduced movement of a joint, inflammation (swelling) , and/or bruising.
Muscle cramp/Spasm
A muscle cramp is a sudden and involuntary contraction of one or more of your muscles. The pain can be severe, although generally harmless, muscle cramps can make it temporarily impossible to use the affected muscle.
Most muscle cramps develop in the leg muscles, particularly in the calf.
-
Overuse of a muscle, dehydration, muscle strain or simply holding a position for a prolonged period can cause a muscle cramp.
Underlying issues could be poor blood supply, nerve compression, or inadequate minerals within the body.
-
A sudden, sharp pain
You might also feel or see a hard lump of muscle tissue beneath your skin.
Muscle Fatigue
Also known as muscle ischeamia. This occurs when the muscles remain in a state of constant contraction and/or with trigger points present (hypersensitive areas in the muscle tissue) which causes reduced blood flow to the muscle tissue and a lack of oxygen supply, as well as removal of metabolic waste. This is more likely to occur to the muscles involved with posture , which are located in the back.
-
Poor posture or prolonged static work
Inactivity or reduced movement
Dehydration
-
Ache, burning or tingling pain in the muscles.
Often worse after being in one position for a long period of time (eg sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling)
Stiffness or tension.
Knots in your muscles.
